Body Attractiveness: What Research Says and What You Can Actually Change

Which body proportions studies link with perceived attractiveness - shoulder-to-waist ratio, waist-to-hip ratio, symmetry and leg length - how much they matter, how to measure yours, and how to improve them.

"How attractive is my body?" is a question people search constantly and one that cannot be answered with a single number. What can be measured are a handful of proportions that researchers have repeatedly connected with a body being perceived as balanced and athletic. This guide covers what those are, how strong the evidence is, and which of them you can change.

The short version

  • Men: the most studied signal is the V-shape: shoulders broad relative to the waist and hips.
  • Women: the most studied signal is the waist-to-hip ratio, with an hourglass balance of shoulders, waist and hips.
  • Both: left-right symmetry, leg length relative to height, and overall leanness and posture add smaller effects.
  • Taste varies. Every one of these findings describes an average tendency across many people, not what any one person will prefer.

Shoulder-to-waist ratio (men)

Studies in which people rate silhouettes or photos of male bodies, including work by researchers such as Maisey and colleagues in the Lancet and Dixson and colleagues on physique preferences, repeatedly find that a higher shoulder-to-hip ratio is rated as more attractive. In practice this means broad shoulders and upper back over a narrower waist.

With a tape, the classic bodybuilding target is a shoulder circumference 1.6 times the waist. From a front photo, straight-line widths give smaller numbers, so a photo ratio around 1.5 already reads as a strong V. Waist-to-hip ratio (women)

Devendra Singh's work in the early 1990s popularised waist-to-hip ratios near 0.7 as a frequently preferred proportion, and many later studies found similar tendencies in Western samples. Cross-cultural research also found different preferences in some populations, which is why the number is a tendency and not a standard. Symmetry

Small random differences between the left and right sides of the body are called fluctuating asymmetry. Some studies link lower asymmetry with higher perceived attractiveness, but the effects are small and are debated. Two or three degrees of shoulder tilt is normal. Leg length and overall proportions

Several studies find moderately longer legs relative to height are rated more favourably, with the preferred range in the mid-to-high 40 percent of height (inseam divided by height) in many samples. Because the fastest signals are waist and posture, most people see the largest change in a photo score from a modest fat loss and a few weeks of posture work before any new muscle has appeared.

How to get a fair measurement

  1. Stand 2-3 metres from the camera with the phone at chest height and the whole body in frame.
  2. Wear fitted clothing or swimwear so your outline is visible.
  3. Stand relaxed with weight even on both feet and arms slightly away from the body.
  4. Use the same spot, time of day and clothing for every retake, then compare trends across a month rather than single photos.

What this does not measure

Real-world attractiveness includes face, grooming, style, health, voice, humour, confidence and shared values, and those often outweigh body proportions once people actually meet. Use body scores the way you would use any fitness metric: as a way to see what is changing and what to work on, not as a rating of your worth.

How much does face matter compared with body?
For first impressions, most research finds the face carries a large share of perceived attractiveness, alongside grooming, style, posture and how a person carries themselves. A body score covers only the physique part.
