Ape Index Calculator
Measure your arm span against your height. A positive ape index means your reach exceeds your height.
About this tool
Ape index is arm span minus height (or the ratio of the two). Most adults are within about 2-3 cm of equal. A longer span helps in climbing, boxing, swimming and rowing, and changes leverage in the deadlift (shorter effective pull) and bench press (longer range of motion).
To measure span, stand with your back to a wall, arms straight out, and measure fingertip to fingertip, ideally with a helper.
How to read your result
Average.
Long reach.
