About this tool

Chest-to-waist ratio divides chest circumference (measured at the nipple line, tape level and snug but not compressed) by waist circumference (at the navel). It captures taper using the chest rather than the shoulders, which the Adonis Index and V-Taper tool measure instead - the three are related but not identical, since chest width, shoulder width and waist size can move somewhat independently.

This ratio also feeds directly into body-shape classification: a high chest-to-waist ratio reads as trapezoid or inverted-triangle, while a ratio near 1 reads as rectangle or oval. See the Body Shape Detector for the full picture including hips.

How to read your result

Below 1.0

Waist at or above chest width.

1.0-1.15

Average taper.

1.15-1.3

Athletic taper.

1.3-1.45

Strong taper.

1.45+

Exceptional taper.

Frequently asked questions

Chest or shoulders - which ratio matters more?
Neither is more "correct." Shoulder-to-waist (the V-Taper tool) reflects skeletal width and deltoid development; chest-to-waist adds rib cage and pectoral size. Together they describe your taper more completely than either alone.
Can I improve my chest-to-waist ratio?
Chest training (pressing movements) and overall upper-body development can add width; waist circumference responds mainly to body-fat change, since rib cage width itself does not change.
